Solo mining odds: lottery or legitimate strategy?

Seeing more people point small rigs at solo pools. The expected value is the same as pooled, but the variance is brutal. Anyone here actually hit a block solo?

Never hit one, but the dream is what keeps my miner switched on to be honest.
